Sustainability
What
is Sustainable Development?
Sustainable Development is a multi-faceted approach that
allows for continued growth while preserving resources and ecosystems
for future generations. It utilizes design and construction practices
that reduce the negative impacts on both the environment and the population.
Miller Engineers & Scientists emphasizes sustainability
in every project. Our staff of qualified engineers and scientists will
work with you to create a practical, sustainable project, customized to
your needs. Whether you are interested in a commercial, residential, or
industrial development, we are dedicated to giving you the quality of
service your project deserves.
Sustainable Development concentrates on the following
five areas:
- Sustainable site planning
- Preserving water and water efficiency
- Energy efficiency and renewable energy
- Conservation of materials and resources
- Indoor environmental quality
Reduction of capital costs, increased worker health and
productivity, and reduced pollution and waste are some of the benefits
of utilizing sustainable design and construction practices. Sustainability
also provides long-term economic benefits by lowering operating costs
for homes, businesses, and taxpayers; increasing the value of properties
and businesses, and making neighborhoods more attractive places to live
and work.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
The U.S. Green Building Council has established LEED
national standards for developing high-performance, sustainable developments.
Currently, this program is the most widely used for determining a project’s
sustainability. It rates various aspects of design and construction to
determine the effect of a building on its inhabitants, environment, community,
and the economy.
LEED standards were created to establish a common standard
of measurement in "green" building, recognize environmental
leadership, stimulate competition and raise consumer awareness, and promote
whole-building design practices. For more information on the LEED certification
process for both new projects and existing buildings, please visit the
U.S. Green Building Council
website.
