June 23-25, 2006
Join
the Midwest
Renewable Energy Association (MREA) for their 17th
annual Renewable
Energy and Sustainable Living Fair in Custer, Wisconsin.
The Fair, scheduled for June 23-25, offers over 100 workshops presented
by experts from across the US, as well as working demonstrations
of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, products
that help consumers save money and energy while protecting the environment,
and special workshops and entertainment for children and families.

FOCUS ON BUSINESS
Hoffman,
LLC
As a planning, architecture, and construction management company headquartered
in Appleton, Wisconsin, Hoffman,
LLC is working hard to improve the use
of sustainability in commercial projects throughout Wisconsin.
Most
recently, they have designed a geothermal heating system using on-site
detention ponds for the Pine Haven Christian Home in Sheboygan Falls,
Wisconsin. Walking paths have been incorporated on the property
that link to neighborhood trails, and the use of sustainable elements
such as daylighting and low flow water fixtures, low VOC paint, and recycled
fiber carpet are also part of the design of the project. Hoffman,
LLC, utilizing their innovative project delivery method Total Project
Management: Vision Taken to the Power of Green, is assisting Pine
Haven Christian Home in achieving a higher quality of life for the
future residents of this senior living community.
THE MILLER ADVANTAGE
Biofiltration
Storm
water biofiltration facilities are an effective alternative to storm
water detention basins under the right conditions. These
facilities use an “engineered” soil
mix to filter storm water before discharge. As more of these facilities
are implemented, many designers are finding that drainage times are longer than
anticipated.
Laboratory testing conducted by Miller Engineers & Scientists
has found that the generic mix formulation suggested in WDNR
Practice Standard 1004 does not provide the optimum permeability required for
all applications. It
is important that designers specify minimum permeability
requirements, conduct mix design testing and specify quality control
testing during construction. Attention
to detail, ranging from design considerations through construction techniques,
is critical to the performance of these systems.
BLUEPRINT FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Winter Seminar
Due to the growing interest in the Blueprint for Sustainable
Development Seminar that Miller Engineers & Scientists, Applied Ecological
Services, and The Kubala Washatko Architects presented in March, we
will be hosting another, more comprehensive seminar in early winter.
More complete information on this next seminar will follow in upcoming
issues!
