FOCUS ON BUSINESS

J.F. Ahern

One of the leading mechanical and fire protection contractors in the United States, J. F. Ahern Co. is a privately-held company headquartered in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, with branch offices throughout the upper Midwest.  Their firm provides customers with building systems that are not only environmentally sound, but also economically viable. From commercial mechanical installations to ethanol and biodiesel plants, the Ahern team has expertise in the design, engineering, fabrication, and installation of quality green building systems.

Their commitment to the environment extends to their own facilities, namely their 54,000 square-foot expansion in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.  This project is pending a LEED-Gold rating from the US Green Building Council, and incorporates such sustainable elements as a greenwater collection system to reuse rainwater for bathroom facilities, a high-efficiency HVAC system, in-floor radiant heating, natural lighting , and the use of recycled and environmentally friendly construction products. Congratulations to J.F. Ahern for their environmental responsibility and stewardship!

THE MILLER ADVANTAGE

Stormwater Collection and Reuse

The same old, same old just won’t cut it anymore!  In the last decade, we have progressed from a practice of rapidly and efficiently transporting stormwater runoff via concrete channels and conduits to slowing down this same runoff by utilizing such naturalized elements as rain barrels, cisterns, rain gardens and native vegetation, level spreaders and filter strips, and grassed swales.  The end result is a more aesthetically pleasing and sustainable methodology for controlling stormwater.

“Keeping Stormwater Where it Falls” is the revealing title of a brief presentation prepared by Miller Engineers & Scientists to inform the general public of what an individual can do to control stormwater runoff.  A homeowner can become an environmental steward by merely following the guidelines and manuals provided by the UW Extension and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.  By implementing a few simple tasks, we all can assist local government in improving surface water quality and replenishing our aquifers.
